Fun with InDesign

I have spent the last two evenings teaching myself InDesign CS2. Not the easiest thing to learn, but being competent in Photoshop helps a ton! I am using the program to create Ethan's bday invitation. I'm almost done with a presentable design.

Cropping his face (done in Photoshop) was the best part...

My friend Matt Gonzales passed away Monday morning. He had a gentle soul and will be missed by many.
A huge baseball fan, lover of old movies and friend to all.
Rest in peace, dear friend.

New List Added

I added a new list to my blog on the left side column. It is titled Recent Wines I Recommend. I do not pretend to be a sommelier, but I want to keep this list for two (selfish) reasons.
1) I can always go back to this list before going to the store. I tend to lose the scraps of paper that I normally write wine names on.
2) This will make me be more adventurous in my wine purchases. I tend to get the same two or three labels every time.

I really enjoyed the Carlos Basso Dos Fincas' Cabernet Sauvignon.

Celebrating W.H. Auden

W.H. Auden was born in England 100 years ago today. Read NPR's article here.

I like his poetry. Like many people, I first heard his poetry during the movie "Four Weddings and a Funeral" that included this famous poem during the funeral scene:

Funeral Blues
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Mother-in-Laws

I just finished reading a novel called "Mother-in-Law Diaries" by fellow Austinite Carol Dawson. (See my recent reads for an Amazon link)

I really enjoyed the book, but it made me think about my mother-in-law Marilyn. Marilyn passed away June 2005 after a short, but brave battle with cancer. She was amazing, funny and strong woman who I only knew for 8 short years. While I know many wives have stormy relationships with their mother-in-laws, I was lucky to know mine.

Marilyn, I miss you and think of you often.

I found this quote about coffee that I dig...

"I think we all pray to the first cup of the day. It's a silent prayer, sung while the mind is still foggy and blue. 'O Magic Cup,' it might go, 'carry me above the traffic jam. Keep me civil in the subway. And forgive my employer, as you forgive me. Amen"
--Stewart Lee Allen

Speaking of coffee...I am a true coffee lover. I was into it way before Starbucks made it trendy. I just came across this place that I want to go and try.
